Introduction. Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, many medications have been studied with the purpose of treating the disease and its symptoms. This study aims to characterize hospitalized patients with COVID-19, analyze the pharmacotherapy used for their management, and show the importance of treatment recommendations made by clinical pharmacists to help improve the patient’s management. Materials and methods. An observational cross-sectional study was conducted in a private hospital in Costa Rica. In this study, 136 patients with COVID-19 admitted between July 2020 and May 2021 were included. The population was stratified by level of severity to evaluate the length of stay and mortality. The pharmacotherapy of the disease was analyzed and compared with the recommended guidelines, in accordance with the patient’s clinical condition. Pharmacist-driven interventions were made and documented to quantify drug-related problems in COVID-19 pharmacotherapy and to determine the need to further recommendations or education on this subject. Results. Only older age proved to be a factor with statistically significant differences for both hospitalization time and mortality in COVID-19 patients and hospitalization time showed statistically significant differences according to the severity of the patient’s disease. A total of 43 pharmacy interventions were performed, which were mostly related to drug selection, adverse event monitorization, and dose adjustment. Conclusions. Patients admitted to the private hospital service in Costa Rica do not differ significantly from those admitted worldwide, and the collaboration of a clinical pharmacist in the multidisciplinary team can help improve the patient’s pharmacotherapy and general management.
